A judge's gavel is a symbol of power, but at the same time, we realize that there are limitations to our legal system. How much more is the law of God weakened by our sinful nature. This isn't the fault of the law, for it is perfect, holy and righteous. No, this is because we are unable to keep the law and cannot carry it out as we desire to. If life seems like a daily battle against sin, that is because it is! Thanks be to God that Jesus was sent to be our Savior, to take the curse of the law upon himself, and to become our sin offering. Baptized into Jesus' death and resurrection, we, by faith, know that Christ lives in us, and so does His Spirit. Since this is true, now we walk, every day, in the newness of life that comes from Jesus Christ's saving work. What else is this but life in the very midst of death? And, oh, what a difference!
